Read an Excerpt From Fallen Beauty by Astrid Scholte
There's something quietly horrifying about being forced to paint dead animals, and it's the detail I can't stop turning over. A living girl spending her days rendering corpses means she learns anatomy through rot, beauty through stillness. That's the kind of education that shapes a person's entire worldview, and I suspect Scholte is using it to ask what happens when someone who has only ever known endings gets a taste of something alive.
The setup also reads like a classic locked-room premise with a speculative twist. Thorelea's art is her entire reality. I'd want to know whether her paintings are commissioned, whether they carry some magical or political weight in this world, or whether the dead animals are a metaphor for the society that keeps her. That ambiguity is what pulls me in.
I don't know yet if the book will deliver on that promise, but the excerpt has me curious about the moment the prisoner turns her brush on something that moves. That's where the real story usually starts.
