1Password for Agents

1Password for Agents
1Password is moving beyond human passwords to tackle the agent economy, building a way for AI agents to log in and take actions on your behalf without ever seeing your actual credentials. It's a timely bet on identity infrastructure for a world where software is starting to act for us. The pitch is simple and powerful: keep secrets out of the hands of machines, even as those machines do more of our work.

The idea here is smart: hand your passwords to an AI agent and you've basically handed over the keys to everything. 1Password is positioning itself as the bouncer, letting agents through the door without ever seeing the actual credentials. That's the right instinct, because the moment AI agents start doing real work across your accounts, the old model of storing secrets breaks down.

What I find interesting is how this connects to the broader agent economy. We're seeing a wave of startups building agents that book flights, file taxes, order supplies. But every one of those agents needs to authenticate, and nobody wants to paste their master password into a prompt. If 1Password can become the standard for agent identity, that's a powerful position to hold.

I'd want to know how they handle delegation and revocation. If an agent goes rogue or gets compromised, can you kill its access instantly? And what about audit trails, who did what under whose authority? Those details will determine whether this is a real product or a press release.

For now I'll take it as a sign that the big players are taking agent security seriously, which is overdue. The interesting part is whether developers actually adopt a password manager's SDK or roll their own.
