Ukraine says Starlink is back to normal after disruptions
The most striking detail here is that a week of degraded service happened at all, and that we still don't know why. For over a year, Starlink has been the backbone of Ukraine's battlefield communications, handling drone targeting, encrypted messaging, and civilian internet in areas where the grid is gone. A week of slowdowns in the middle of a war is a tactical shift.
I'd want to know what the disruption actually was. Russian jamming has been a persistent threat, with reports of electronic warfare targeting the terminals. But Musk has also restricted Starlink access before, most notably over the Crimea drone strikes, so the political angle is hard to ignore. The fact that Zelenskyy is publicly reassuring everyone that it's normal again says something about how fragile this arrangement is.
What this connects to is the quiet privatization of war's infrastructure. Ukraine's ability to fight now runs through a for-profit constellation owned by a man with his own foreign policy instincts. That's a strange and uncomfortable place for a nation's sovereignty to end up, and I suspect we'll see more of these episodes before anyone builds a real alternative.
