Qualcomm is betting big on data centers as smartphone sales sink
The interesting bit here is the timing. Qualcomm has talked about data center ambitions before, but usually in the context of edge or low-power inference. Now it's framing the AI data center as a core growth engine while its home turf, smartphones, is down roughly a fifth. That's a big swing.
I'd want to know how much of this is real revenue versus announced intent. Partnerships with Amazon and Meta sound good, but both hyperscalers design their own silicon and tend to treat external vendors as fill-ins for specific workloads. Qualcomm's strength has always been power efficiency, which matters in phones and could matter in dense AI racks, but the server market rewards software ecosystems and memory bandwidth, areas where Nvidia and AMD have years of head start.
Still, desperation can focus a company. If handset sales stay soft, Qualcomm has to find growth somewhere, and AI infrastructure is where the money is flowing. The real test will be whether these partnerships turn into volume shipments rather than press releases. I'd want to see unit numbers and which specific accelerators they're supplying before I get excited.
