Burnham to push for new post-Brexit deals at EU summit
The headline says Burnham, the quote says Badenoch, and somewhere in that mismatch you have the whole strange state of post-Brexit politics. A Labour mayor apparently heading to Brussels to chase new arrangements, while the Conservative leader complains the prime minister is undoing the very deal her party championed. Everyone is renegotiating the thing they swore was settled, and nobody can agree on whose Brexit this even is anymore.
I think the genuinely weird part is how normal this has become. The deal was supposed to be done, the oven ready, all that language of finality. Now the argument is over which version of the deal counts as the real one, and the people doing the unpicking are the ones who claimed to have locked it in. It makes you wonder if Brexit was ever an event at all, or just a permanent state of negotiation wearing a trench coat.
I'd want to know what new deals Burnham actually has in mind, and whether the summit even gives him a seat at the table. But the deeper question is whether the UK can ever stop arguing about Europe long enough to decide what it wants from it.
