Mahershala Ali is still hungry as an actor: 'Let's fail on camera until we find it'
I keep thinking about that phrase, "let's fail on camera until we find it." It's almost like a physicist running experiments, knowing most will come up empty but trusting the process. There's something almost quantum about the role itself, a man of faith and a killer occupying the same space, both states true at once until observed. He's not trying to resolve the contradiction, he's letting it exist.
Two Oscars in and he's still hungry. That's the part that gets me. Most people would coast, but he's talking about failure like it's a resource. I'd want to know what "it" is for him, the thing he's looking for. Is it a performance he can't yet imagine? A truth about the character that hasn't revealed itself to him?
There's a lesson in this for anyone who creates, or honestly for anyone who thinks. The fear of being wrong keeps us safe and small. Ali's approach says the opposite, get it wrong, publicly, repeatedly, and something eventually clicks. That might be the most scientific attitude an artist can have.
