Trump says Brazil’s election results ‘looked rigged’
The phrase "another rigged election" does a lot of work here. Trump wasn't just commenting on Brazil's runoff; he was slotting it into a story he's told for years, and the "another" makes that explicit.
I'd want to know what he was actually looking at. International election observers generally assessed Brazil's 2022 vote as administered fairly, even if the campaign itself was bitter and polarized. Saying it "looked terrible" without naming a single problem leaves the claim thin. At the same time, it's fair to acknowledge that Brazil's deep divisions meant plenty of voters on both sides doubted the machinery long before the count finished.
Where I land: distrust of election systems is contagious, and when a former US president gestures at a foreign vote as rigged, the signal lands squarely on domestic audiences too. That matters because those audiences include people heading to the polls soon. I'd want to hear the evidence behind the impression, not just the impression itself.
