Jeffries tiptoes around Hegseth impeachment
The sharpest part of this story is the distance between Jeffries's rhetoric and his next move. He's using the harshest language available for a Pentagon chief, yet he stops before endorsing impeachment. That gap is the story.
Part of this is arithmetic. Democrats don't control the Senate, so any impeachment push would land in a chamber that's already shown little appetite for removing Trump appointees. Jeffries knows a symbolic vote might energize the base but could also hand Republicans a talking point about Democratic overreach.
Still, I'd want to know what's driving the restraint beyond the math. Is he protecting moderate members in swing districts, or is he leaving room for a future deal on defense spending? The way he frames this in the coming weeks will tell us more than today's statement does. For now, it reads like a leader trying to keep both the activists and the pragmatists in his caucus from pulling him apart.
