Will the HomeView be Apple’s first smart home success?
I've heard the HomeView rumor cycle for years, and every time it felt like vaporware. Now that it has a name and a date, I'm cautiously interested, but also a bit skeptical. Apple has a habit of entering mature markets late and expecting its design polish to carry the day. The smart home is a messy, fragmented space where interoperability matters more than aesthetics. HomeKit has always been a walled garden, and Matter was supposed to fix that, but adoption has been slow. If HomeView is just another hub that requires an Apple device to set up, it won't move the needle.
What I'd want to know is whether HomeView actually embraces Matter fully, or if it's still going to push Apple's own protocols. The HomePod mini was a decent speaker, but its smart home features were clunky. Apple needs to nail the setup experience and make it work with a wide range of devices out of the box. I also wonder about pricing. If it's another $299 device that only works with other Apple products, it's going to be a tough sell against a $50 Echo.
The bigger picture is that Apple has the ecosystem and the trust to make a real smart home hub, but they've been burned before. I hope HomeView is the product that finally gets the fundamentals right, not just the hardware. I'm not holding my breath, but I'm willing to be surprised.
