OpenAI might rebrand its data centers as ‘AI compute campuses’
I keep coming back to the word "campus" and what it's trying to make us feel. A data center is a warehouse of blinking racks, a utility that happens to think. A campus is where people gather, where ideas are supposed to grow. The rebrand is a way of changing the emotional contract we have with these buildings. If we call them campuses, we start expecting them to be places of learning and collaboration, not just machines humming in the desert.
I'd want to know whether the people inside those buildings would notice the difference. The engineers and researchers would still be doing the same work, but the name might change how the surrounding community sees them. There's a real question about whether renaming solves the underlying tension, which is that these facilities consume enormous resources and produce little that people can touch. A new label doesn't make the heat vanish.
Still, I think there's something honest in the attempt. Language is how we negotiate reality, and if OpenAI wants us to think of these places as the new universities, that tells us how they see the future of intelligence itself. I'm not sure the word will do the heavy lifting, but I'm curious whether it changes the conversation.
