Where Opposition to Data Centers and Renewable Energy Projects Converge
The irony here is hard to miss. Data centers, which guzzle electricity and water, and wind and solar farms, which produce clean power, would seem to be opposites. Yet the local opposition sounds almost identical: views spoiled, air and water at risk, property values dragged down. That tells me the objections are less about the technology and more about change itself, and about who gets to decide what a place becomes.
I think there's something worth digging into. Some of these fears are legitimate, especially around water use and grid strain from data centers. But when the same playbook gets used against renewables, it starts to look like a way to stop any new infrastructure at all. That's a problem for the transition, because we need both more clean energy and the digital infrastructure to run the grid and the economy.
What I'd want to know next is how much of this opposition is coordinated, and whether there's a path to address the real concerns without simply saying no to everything. Because if we can't build either, we're stuck.
