Talarico accuses Musk of buying his ‘own personal U.S. Senator’
The charge is simple and it lands because it names something voters already suspect: that a single billionaire can effectively purchase a Senate seat. Talarico is betting that casting Paxton as Musk's personal project will stick in a state where the tech mogul has become a polarizing figure. It's a smart political move, and the fact that he's saying it out loud forces Paxton to answer for the money whether he wants to or not.
I'd want the actual numbers, though. How much has Musk given, and through what channels? Direct contributions are capped, so the real question is whether this is flowing through super PACs and dark-money groups. That distinction matters for whether Talarico's "buying a senator" claim holds up or is just rhetoric.
The uncomfortable part is that almost every serious Senate candidate in the country relies on wealthy donors. Talarico's own campaign isn't funded by small-dollar donations alone. The real question is scale and transparency. If Musk can outspend everyone else combined, the system does look broken. I just wish more candidates on both sides were willing to have that conversation honestly instead of only when it suits them.
