Latch
I love the sheer physicality of this. Most app blockers are basically asking you to outsmart your own impulse control, which is a losing battle when you're tired and doomscrolling. Latch just says fine, you want Instagram? Let's see you put on shoes and walk three blocks to the coffee shop first. That's a commitment device with actual stakes, and I think that's the missing piece in a lot of digital wellbeing tools.
The whole pitch hinges on whether the walking requirement is genuinely annoying enough to break the habit loop. If the key is too close, people will just game it. Too far, and they might uninstall out of frustration. I'd want to know what the beta users are reporting on that friction curve.
There's also a bigger trend here worth watching. We're seeing a shift from pure digital timers and nags toward tools that force physical interaction with the real world. Latch slots into that. It won't fix your focus permanently, but as a conscious reset, I can see it having real legs for remote workers and students. It's not a silver bullet, but the core idea has real product-market fit with anyone who's ever paid a friend to hide their phone.
