Watch live: Trump, first lady host Halloween event at White House
Trump landed back from South Carolina and went straight to the South Lawn to hand out candy, a sharp turn from rally mode. The annual Halloween event is a tradition that lets the White House showcase a softer side, but it's also a reminder that the president wears two hats: campaigner and host.
I'd want to know how many children actually get through the gates, since these celebrations are often tightly managed. But the symbolism matters more than the headcount. With midterms two days out, this night of costumes and candy offers a brief, non-partisan pause that both sides can appreciate, even if they read it differently. It doesn't change any votes, but it does remind us that the presidency still has ceremonial duties that transcend the campaign trail.
