Tesla plans to start selling Cybercabs by the end of the year
Selling Cybercabs to other transport operators instead of running its own robotaxi fleet is the most consequential detail here. Wholesaling the hardware is a different business from owning the service, and it pushes the risk of operations, regulation, and maintenance onto whoever buys the cars. That could be the smarter play, because standing up a ride-hailing network from scratch is expensive and slow.
I'd want to know who actually signs up. A transport company taking delivery of a vehicle that depends on Tesla's full self-driving software, with regulatory approval still patchy across states, is accepting a lot of unknowns. Price, range, safety certification, all of it has to hold together before any fleet operator commits real money.
The deadline deserves skepticism. Tesla has a habit of announcing dates that drift, so the real test is whether production and approvals line up before year end, and whether any buyer shows up at all. That's where I'll be watching.
