Costco plans warehouse in a new state as others await their first store
Costco's timing here is the part I find most curious. The chain has had decades to plant flags in every state, and it still hasn't, which tells you how deliberately the company picks its markets. I suspect the new location will finally bring a warehouse to a state that has long sent its shoppers on road trips for a hot dog and a rotisserie chicken, and for the people who made that drive, it's the sort of announcement worth celebrating.
What connects to me is how patient Costco is with growth. Most retailers chase expansion to please Wall Street, but Costco tends to open in modest numbers each year, choosing sites based on density and distribution rather than just buzz. That caution has served it well, and it also explains why some entire states have gone without a store for so long.
I'd want to know which state gets the nod and what took so long, and whether the company expects this location to change its approach. For now, I'll just wait alongside the shoppers who've been holding out for that first membership card.
