A Reporter Who Saw Covid Coming Has Died
I keep thinking about how rare her kind of reporting has become. Branswell didn't wait for the official line or the press release. She read the studies, followed the reports coming out of Wuhan, and started telling the truth before it was comfortable to hear. That early coverage mattered enormously. It gave clinicians a head start and it gave the rest of us information we could actually use, instead of reassurance that turned out to be wrong.
What I'd want to know is whether anyone is being trained to take her place. The next pandemic doesn't send a memo, and the people who cover it well tend to be the ones already steeped in the science when the first cases surface. That kind of expertise takes years to build, and it's hard to see where the next Helen Branswell is coming from as health journalism budgets keep shrinking.
She was 69, still in the middle of a career she clearly loved. Her death is a real loss for the public health world, but the rest of us get to keep the benefit of the work she left behind.
