Oregon teacher fought school attacker before armed dad shot suspect 'multiple times'
I keep coming back to the teacher who fought before the gunfire. Whatever her training, whatever her size, she saw a kid targeting the most defensible, most innocent room in the building and chose to move toward the danger. That instinct deserves a closer look, because we often talk about lockdowns and drills, but nobody drills the moment when the plan fails and you're just a person against another person.
Then there's the dad with the gun. Some will read this as vindication for more armed presence on campus. I read it as pure luck. A parent happened to be on campus that day, happened to be carrying, happened to get a clean line. That's a lottery ticket that paid out. The deeper question is what happens on the days when nobody's there, which is most days, and whether the teacher's bravery was the real system working or a desperate last resort.
I'd want to know what drove the 16-year-old back to his old school, why that classroom specifically. The suspect's history with the school and the targeting of special ed kids suggests something personal, something broken that no armed response can address. This story has a survivor's ending, but the uncomfortable truth is that the factors leading up to that moment, alienation, vulnerability, access to weapons, were all in motion long before anyone pulled a trigger.
