Selective sanctuary: America’s ‘White South Africans Only’ refugee policy is wrong
I keep coming back to one question: what happens to the next group that needs protection but doesn't fit the preferred profile? If we decide that White South Africans deserve refuge, we've quietly set a precedent that worthiness is measured by identity rather than danger. That's a slippery path, and it's one we've walked before with ugly results.
There's a real argument for targeted programs. Countries sometimes need to respond quickly to a specific crisis, and South African farmers have faced genuine violence that's been underreported. I don't doubt their suffering. But the framing here matters. When the policy is announced as "White South Africans Only," it stops being about need and starts being about belonging. That's a distinction with consequences.
I'd want to know how this proposal came together and who's championing it, because the optics suggest it's less about humanitarianism and more about sending a message. If the goal is truly to help people, the simplest fix is to broaden the criteria and let evidence of persecution, not skin color, decide who gets in. That's the standard we should hold ourselves to, even when it's harder to sell.
