On 'tense' Antonelli's big weekend, this was Hamilton's day
There is something almost supernatural about a 40-year-old finding his fastest pace at Ferrari, of all places, after years of people writing his eulogy. I grew up watching Hamilton make the impossible look ordinary, and to see him snap out of it on a weekend when everyone was pointing at the teenager feels like the universe having a sense of humor.
What gets me is the physics of momentum. F1 drivers talk about "feeling" the car, but really they are negotiating with time itself, braking later, carrying speed through corners that your brain says is insane. Antonelli has the reflexes and the fearlessness of youth. Hamilton has the memory of every lap he has ever driven, a library of thousandths of a second. On Saturday, that library proved louder than any young heart.
I think people are too quick to crown the kid and too quick to bury the old man. The season is long, and youth will have its days. But it is worth remembering that peak performance bends into strange, unsteady curves, with resurrections along the way.
