Rogers dodges questions on MAGA label, Trump tariffs
The tariff question is the one that matters more here, and Rogers dodging it says something. Michigan's auto industry runs on cross-border supply chains with Canada. Parts cross the border multiple times before a car is finished. Tariffs on Canadian goods hit the supply chain directly in that state. Voters in places like Macomb and Wayne counties know it.
The MAGA label question is easier to understand why he'd duck it. Calling yourself a MAGA Republican in a general election can cost you independents, but rejecting it can cost you the base. Rogers is trying to hold both, and that's a hard position to defend when a journalist pins you down.
What I'd want to know next is how he squares his tariff answer, or lack of one, with the business community in Michigan that has been vocal about trade with Canada. That's where the pressure will come from, and it won't stop after one Sunday show appearance.
