This Is a Drawing

This Is a Drawing
An artist named David Popa draws enormous naked figures on shorelines with chalk and charcoal, and they only look right from the air. His latest, Rebirth, was a nude woman wrapped in Norway's amniotic-looking waters, and the tide came in and swallowed the whole thing before the paint could dry. It's not Photoshop, folks, it's just a very committed man with very big chalk.

The part I can't stop thinking about is the tide. Popa finished Rebirth, a nude figure drawn on a Norwegian shoreline with chalk and charcoal, and then the rising water came in and covered it. He calls himself an Earth artist, and that's the deal: the canvas is a beach and the deadline is the ocean.

I also like that people keep mistaking these for Photoshop or AI. We've gotten so used to perfect overhead images being fake that the idea of a man climbing around a shoreline with chalk for days seems less plausible than a filter. But there's a real body in that shape, or at least a real drawing of one, and the water wrapping her like amniotic fluid is just the fjord doing its job.

I'd want to know how long Rebirth took and whether he ever lost a piece to wind halfway through. Maybe that's the point though. The image only exists for a few hours, and then it's gone, which makes it more honest than most art that pretends to last forever.
