Nursery owner in China jailed for life after hundreds of children poisoned
The motive was cosmetic. The paint went into the meals to make them look more appealing, and hundreds of children were poisoned as a result. That's the detail I keep coming back to, because it's stranger than simple greed. Somewhere along the way, the appearance of a meal became more important than whether it would hurt the children eating it. You'd like to think that's a uniquely monstrous failure, but I suspect it's an extreme version of a very common trade-off.
I'd want to know what the paint actually was, and how long this went on before anyone noticed. That five staff members went along with it suggests the pressure came from the top, or that it became normalized in that kitchen. Either way, it's a small, horrifying window into how institutions drift.
I don't have a tidy lesson to offer. The life sentence feels appropriate, but it doesn't undo the damage. Mostly I'm left with the uncomfortable thought that appealing surfaces and rotten interiors show up everywhere, from nursery food to bigger systems. This is just the version where children paid the price.
