Mercedes-AMG’s first ground-up SUV is a 1,150hp electric beast
A 1,150-horsepower family SUV is the kind of spec that sounds absurd on paper and will probably feel even more absurd on the road. I get why AMG is doing it. The brand's whole identity is excess, and an electric powertrain removes the old excuses about weight and packaging. You can stuff three motors and a big battery under a tall body and still call it a performance vehicle, because torque delivery is instant and the chassis electronics do the heavy lifting.
What interests me more is the axial flux motor choice. That's not the typical radial flux setup most EVs use, and it suggests AMG is chasing power density and packaging efficiency rather than just dropping in the biggest battery it can find. I'd want to know how that affects real-world range and thermal management, because 1,150 horsepower under sustained load is a lot of heat to move around.
The bigger question is whether this lands as a genuine GT or just a very fast tall car. Mercedes has a history of making sporty SUVs that lean on straight-line speed and then soften the handling. I'm curious to see if the SUV version preserves the coupe's composure or if it becomes another 2.6-tonne drag strip hero. Either way, it's a bold statement about where AMG thinks performance goes next.
